[Jockey's Ridge header] Jockey's Ridge State Park
Location: Nags Head, NC
Hours: 8am to 9pm

"Visiting Jockey's Ridge gives me the idea of what the Wright Brothers saw when they arrived here all those years ago," one visitor said recently. Jockey's Ridge State Park is a 414 acre park and is home to the largest sand dune on the East Coast, about 140 feet high. The trek to the top of the highest dune allows a spectacular view of both Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills, as well as the Roanoke Sound and the Atlantic Ocean on opposite sides of the narrow stretch of land.
Kite flying conditions are almost always perfect with consistent breezes and soft landings for beginners learning new stunts. If you're feeling a little adventurous then why not try your hand at hang gliding? A three-hour lesson on Jockey's Ridge State Park can have you soaring just as Orville and Wilbur did. The gentle slope and soft, forgiving sands of the dunes take the most dangerous sport in the world and almost eliminate the possibility for injury.
